About us

Built on one word

The Haq Foundation exists to make education what the word haq says it is: a right — owed to every child, collectible from a world that keeps withholding it.

The founder

From Zar, with a microphone

Zar The Star was born in Tajikistan to an Afghan father, carried across borders as a refugee, and raised in Toronto.

Today she is a New York City stand-up comedian and content creator whose work — sharp, personal, unmistakably hers — reaches hundreds of thousands of people every week. Her Afghan, Tajik, and Muslim identity isn't a footnote to the act; it is the act.

School was the one thing no border crossing could take back out of her head. The Haq Foundation is her answer to a simple, unbearable piece of arithmetic: she received her education by luck of geography, while millions of girls who share her blood are denied theirs by law.

Luck is not a system. Rights are.
